Trip Overview

Everest base camp trekking is popular trekking that is done at the base of the tallest mountain in the world. The high elevation trial, sherpa village, high passes, white water river, flags and prayers of the monastery, and glorious mountains make it always special.  Everest Base Camp trekking is high-altitude trekking to observe the peak of Mount Everest and other glorious Himalayas such as Lhotse, Amadablam, Pumori, Makalu, and many more peaks.

Everest Base camp trekking comprises Sherpa culture with the beauty of the Himalayas which creates a lifetime memory for trekkers. The majestic Khumbu region, and the structure of Sherpa villages with flags and prayers, always fascinate trekkers in this region.

We have been organizing trekking in the Everest region via Lukla and other trekking trials. In the 1970s and 80s, the Everest expedition and Everest Base camp trekking and other Peak climbing trekked through Jiri a small town in Dolkha District. After the construction of the Lukla airstrip, people are attracted to the Lukla route to do Everest Base camp trekking. It reduces the trekking days also as it needs a minimal one-month duration for  Everest Base camp trekking.  But these days, adventure lovers not only like to trek but also learn new cultures and traditions of the newer place. Tourists started to use an earlier route for trekking Everest Base Camp. Jiri was considered the gateway of Everest since transport service was limited to Jiri only. At present up to Salleri vehicles are available and only two more days of trekking will connect to the regular route of Everest Base Camp trekking.  There are multiple options currently to go for Everest base camp trekking. The plan here is based on Lukla as the entry point of Everest Base camp. We provide every detail from Lukla to base camp. Even from Lukla, we can trek via Gokyo  Cho-la Pass to trek base camp. This is a regular trekking plan following Namche Bazar, Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, Pheriche, and so on.

Everest base camp trekking is difficult since the maximum elevation of the trekking trail is 5545m (Kala Patthar). The increasing height of the trail each day makes it more tough and challenging, that's why there are 2 additional days for acclimatization in Namche Bazar and Dingboche. Overall, Everest Base camp trekking is tougher than other available trekking such as Annapurna Base camp trekking and Langtang valley trekking.

Expert View

Everest Base Camp trekking is one of my evergreen trekking destinations. When I was 19 years old, I got an opportunity to trek this sacred place. Though I was unaware of trekking activities in high-altitude mountains. I learned the basics of trekking on that trip to Everest Base Camp. I understood the challenges of high-altitude trekking, food, Sherpa culture, tea houses, and their standard.

When I returned from the Everest trek, I joined a climbing school in Kathmandu. I defined my career path as a trekker. Around the late 90s, I trekked several trekking in Nepal, India, Bhutan, and in Tibet. Everest Trekking regularly attracts me as it is my first choice to trek.

At present, globally people come to Nepal to trek the Everest region, Annapurna region, Langtang region, Makalu region, and many other beautiful destinations. Around 40,000 trekkers only trek in the Everest region annually. I had a different experience every time trekking in the Everest region. I have noticed different difficulties of trekkers during trekking. Today, I just want to share my experiences and suggestions through this article.

Everest trekking has two sections of high altitude that is 2600m to 3500m and 3500m to 5500m. If you are from low land and have no idea of high altitude, it is very risky for you since altitude sickness may catch you. Whether you go solo or in a group, please check your trek plan to know the acclimatization day within the trip plan. Adaptation is very essential when the altitude is increased. Therefore, gradual ascent is a must to adapt to high altitudes. Acclimatization is planned in the itinerary so that we are able to adapt to high altitudes. On acclimatization day, we should plan to visit nearer hiking destinations to check our fitness and adaptability to high altitudes. We come back to the same destination so it helps us to adapt to the context. If Altitude Sickness symptoms are noticed, immediately we must descend down to a lower height otherwise it may be dangerous for you. But it is not always necessary to descend down as we take rest at the same height. There are a few things that must be noticed such as your breathing will become more rapid and deeper as your body aims to maintain the same oxygen intake per unit of time and your lung's ability to absorb oxygen from the air will increase which helps to supply more oxygen in the blood. So ascent gradually and take rest at a defined altitude as the first phase of acclimatization. Another hidden part of Khumbu trekking is the enriched Sherpa culture. You will notice Gompas and the monastery on your way to Everest. You can learn and enjoy their hospitality during your trip. There are mainly two major seasons to trek in the Everest region i.e. Spring and Autumn season. Both seasons have their unique features and advantage for you to trek. I recommend trek with an experienced and equipped agency and competent Trekking guide so that a hassle-free trip will be there. Enjoy your Everest Base Camp trek. Cheers!
