Gokyo valley Renjo-la pass trekking is one of the best trekking in the Everest region. The view that we can see from Gokyo valley is splendid. When we reach Gokyo-Ri, the magnificent Gokyo valley that we captured in our memory forever. The best view of Everest can be observed from this trekking. We can also have real experiences of Sherpa culture and tradition.

The Gokyo valley trek has many highlights the high-elevation lake systems are the noticeable beauty of this region.  We start our trekking from Lukla after landing the flight from Kathmandu. The very famous ethnic village is on its way to Gokyo lake. We can visit Thame, Monjo, Namche bazar and Khumjung village. We create a full ring to complete this wonderful trek from Namche Bazar to Dole, Machhermo, and Gokyo valley, Lungden via Renjo-la pass, Thame, and Namche Bazar.  This trek is spellbinding that you never forget in your entire life. The rural villages, Sherpa settlements, and monasteries create a real stage for performances. We enjoyed every moment there.

Renjo-La Pass is one of the highest passes in the Everest region. It is nearby the Tibetan border. When we reach the top of the Pass, the views of Everest and other mountains are magnificent. The stunning view of Everest is more clear and more noticeable from Gokyo -Ri and Renjo-la pass. Even the Gokyo valley Renjo-la pass trek can combine with EBC and Cho-la pass trek which takes more than 20 days to complete. There are multiple options to complete this trek, we can start from Thame, Lungden via Renjo-la pass to reach Gokyo valley and then continue our trek to EBC via Cho-la pass. We connect to Dzongla to reach EBC via Gorakshep. This takes a minimum of 20 days of trekking which is awesome.  We organize customized treks based on your choice and priority.

The itinerary of the Renjo-La pass is a classical trek to observe beautiful Gokyo village and Gokyo lake. The regular trial used to do the Renjo-la pass followed by Thame, Machhermo, Gokyo village and acclimatization day at Gokyo valley and a trip to Gokyo -Ri(5360m) as a warm-up session for the Renjo-La pass(5340m). During winter Gokyo lake becomes frozen, and last year ice hockey was played there as an adventurous game at the height of 4700m.

Recently, an American Wildlife photographer, Kittiya Pawlowski (8th October 2022) captured a beautiful and rare picture of a snow leopard in the Khumbu region. The Earth’s most forbidding terrain, lung-starving altitude, sky-touching mountains, and barren hills showcase us with mesmerizing views of mountains and the rarest wild animal like snow leopards, red pandas, Kasturi, and many more. Sagarmatha National Park is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979. Gokyo valley and sherpa culture will enhance your knowledge about Nepal's diverse community.

Dole is a small sherpa village in the Khumbu region of Nepal. It lies in the Dudh Kosi River valley just north of Khumjung and south of Machhermo at an altitude of 4200m. It’s a trying climb before we get to the top of the Mong La Pass, but the views make it worth it.

Dole is often a stopping point for trekkers on their way to Gokyo valley.

This trek is especially beautiful in spring when the rhododendrons are blooming. The trail passes many Kharkas, summer settlements used when Sherpas bring herds of yaks to graze in these high pastures. The route passes through the settlements of Tongba (3950m) and Gyele (3960m) to Dole where there are few lodges.

  • Day 07 : Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4400m)
The trail climbs to Lambara at (4220m) and Luza at (4360m). The trial is steep in most places as it climbs through savanna junipers. We can see Kharkas whenever there is a flat spot and the slightest hint of water. The trails continue to climb along the side of the valley, high above the river, crossing sandy spurs to Machhermo at (4410m).
  • Day 08 : Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Lake (4700m)

Today, we climb Gokyo lake. The beautiful valley with beautiful scenery. The magnificent view of Cho-Oyu (8201m) and other mountains can be captured. Beyond the ridge, the valley widens as the trail passes through Pangka at (4390m) then descends to the riverbank before beginning to climb onto the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. It’s a steep climb up the moraine, switch backing alongside the stream to the first small Lake at (4650m), where a family of green Brainy ducks resides.

  • Day 09: Exploration around Gokyo and trek to Gokyo RI (5360m)

Before crossing the Renjo-La pass, we test our fitness by climbing Gokyo Ri. We will wake up early and climb up to the Gokyo-RI for a panoramic view of the Mahalangur Himalayan range. From this point, Mount Everest is viewed splendidly with other mountains. It takes approximately 2 -3 hours to climb to the peak, providing a panoramic view of Cho - Oyu, the Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and the Tawache. • Day 10 : Trek to Lungden (4300m) via crossing Renjo-la pass (5340m)

The crossing of the Renjo-la Pass will be exciting and challenging as we descend into the remote northern Valley where access is restricted, and the landscape progressively resembles that of the Tibetan Valleys beyond the border. There is a chance we will meet Tibetan Traders descending from the Nangpa La pass that leads through the Himalayas from Tibet with their caravans of woolly yaks laden with goods. Overnight at guesthouse/lodge

  • Day 11: Trek to Thame (3800m)

After taking breakfast, we will trek down to Thame for more amazing snow peaks. We may meet Tibetan trader encampments along the way for pictures of a rare lifestyle. This is the site for the spring celebration of the Mani Rimdu festival, held about the middle of May each year. Overnight at guesthouse/lodge

Expert View

Everest region trekking is typically adventurous trekking. We start trekking from an elevation of 2800m which is normally the maximum height for many people who use to live at lower heights. The Gokyo valley Renjo-la pass trekking is another popular trek in the Everest region. The trekking trail takes us through difficult terrain as altitude increases. Following Namche Bazar, Thame, and Machhermo up to Gokyo Valley. Gokyo village and its surroundings give you a mesmerizing view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and many peaks there. We trek up to Gokyo-Ri(5360m), the highest point for this trek. Even though it is hard trekking, the level of hardness is moderate. But also, we must take an appropriate approach during trekking. It is important to understand that you are going to walk for 5-7 hours daily on a rough trail, sometimes it is too steep, and has high passes. You must have a plan to adjust to the wilderness and at the same time, you must know how to overcome the trouble that you face during the trip. Due to these facts, altitude is a major concern since you are going to stay higher than 3000m for almost the completion of trekking which creates challenges since the level of oxygen is very low there. At the same time, breathing can be very crucial and add more difficulty. You must aware of Altitude sickness, and possible solutions that you can decide on instantly. Besides that, the glistering lakes, beautiful snowcapped mountains, sherpa village, rare wild animals, and wonderful vegetation will make you a more exciting and enjoyable journey. Therefore, the following considerable factor must consider cautiously during trekking and before planning:

  1. Provision of acclimatization days in your itinerary: More acclimatization days certainly add an easier part in trekking as we can rest and adapt to that environment. At the same time, if we have more trekking days, it is much simpler to walk for a few hours consistently every day. Normally, we have 15 days itinerary including acclimatization days in Namche Bazar(3800m) and Gokyo Lake(4700m). This is an ideal plan for Gokyo Valley Renjo-la pass trekking. Without acclimatization days, it is vulnerable to trek in high altitudes even if it can reduce your duration for trekking but with a high risk of acute mountain sickness.

  2. Weather Window: If you are lucky, the weather behaves nicely as we expect. You Can’t predict the weather of the mountain, it may change in no seconds without any advance notice. It may create trouble during trekking. The best weather we have is in Autumn and spring but no one can say exactly what weather will be there. But spring is considered an appropriate time for trekking in the Everest region.

  3. Temperature: The normal temperature in April during the day falls between 15 to 12 Celsius similar to October temperature. In the evening time, the temperatures decrease to - 5 to - 10 Celsius which is quite cold and must prepare with adequate trekking gear and warm clothes.

  4. Altitude Sickness: It probably occurs when you go to a higher altitude with less pneumatic force and oxygen level. It can happen to anyone during trekking in high altitudes like Gokyo Valley Renjo-la pass trekking. We trek above 5000m on numerous occasions as we trek Gokyo- Ri and cross Renjo-la pass which may create elevation disorder. Consistent walking, adequate resting time and sufficient drinking water make your body remain hydrated. If you feel more discomfort, immediately you should descend to a lower altitude. Some minor symptoms are headaches, and tiredness but when you have rest it is manageable. Simply enjoy the adventure with the best guidance and precautions.
