Trip Overview

Trekking to Lower Dolpo is strenuous and physically challenging in the remote mountain of Karnali. The trek starts after landing at Juphal airstrip in the Dolpo region. We fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, which is the gateway to Dolpo trekking. The rugged mountain terrain, typical Tibetan-influenced traditional villages, Buddhist monasteries, and high passes make this trekking more challenging and thrilling.
People have lived for centuries in this culturally rich and different region. The people of the Dolpo region are heavily influenced by the Tibetan lifestyle and Tibetan Buddhist culture. While trekking in this region, trekkers have an opportunity to explore centuries-long traditions and culture along with magnificent views of the snowcapped mountain and natural beauty.

We trek via Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is the habitat of several flora and fauna including snow leopards. Shey Phoksundo Lake is the deepest lake in Nepal it is a most beautiful and pristine lake and consider a sacred place for Buddhists.

The rugged terrain and high altitude make this trek more challenging. However, the natural beauty and typical cultural traditions make this trekking memorable and rewarding. The best season to trek in the Dolpo region is late Spring and Autumn.

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

    Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Airport, one of our representatives welcome you and assists you to transfer to the hotel.  Overnight stay at hotel.

  • Day 02: Team Interaction, Permit Management, and Verified Final Checklist of Trekking Equipment and Half-day City Tour of Kathmandu

    The trekkers will have the opportunity to meet their team and interact with each other. In the morning, we process for necessary permits and send office staff to collect them from the authorized office. We arrange and finalize the list of our trekking gear before lunch. In the afternoon, the trekkers will embark on a half-day city tour of Kathmandu, visiting some of the city's historical and cultural landmarks such as Swoyambhunath, Bouddhanath, and Pashupatinath.

  • Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

    We can stroll around Thamel to Kathmandu Durbar Square in the morning to explore traditional shops and temples. Or we can take a morning flight to Nepalgunj and explore Nepalgunj city. We can explore the traditional alleys of Nepalgunj city and can taste local foods in the street. We will stay in the hotel tonight.

  • Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal and trek to Dunai (2,850m)

    In the early morning. We will have breakfast, and transfer to the airport. We will fly for 45 minutes to Juphal airport in Dolpa District. Juphal airport is at an elevation of 2499m. We start trekking to Dunai, the headquarters of the Dolpa district. We take lunch on the way to Dunai. Overnight, stay in Guesthouse/lodge.

  • Day 05: Trek from Dunai to Tarakot (2,540m)

    We start our trekking following small mountain villages on the way from Dunai to Tarakot village which lie on the banks of the Barbung Khola River. We walk for 5-6 hours to reach Tarakot village. While walking, we encounter small beautiful villages, terraced fields, and several waterfalls. We can observe a historic fort Tarakot Dzong on the way to Tarakot.

  • Day 06: Trek from Tarakot to Laina Odar (3,370m)

    We trek to Laina Odar, a small village on the bank of the Tarap Chu River. We pass through dense forests, waterfalls, and beautiful valleys. As elevation increases, we will see barren valleys with a wonderfully picturesque landscape. Stay tonight in Laina Odar.

  • Day 07: Trek from Laina Odar to Nawarpani (3,475m)

    We trek to Nawarpani today from Laina Odar village. You will notice splendid vistas of the surrounding mountains. Overnight stay at Nawarpani.

  • Day 08: Trek from Nawarpani to Dho Tarap (4,090m)

    Today, we trek to Dho Tarap from Nawarpani, which is in the upper Dolpo region. It takes 6-7 hours of walking to reach Dho Tarap.  We will enjoy viewing magnificent views of Dhaulagiri and other peaks. We spend a night at Dho Tarap.

  • Day 09: Acclimatization in Dho Tarap

    Today, we explore Dho Tarap. You can visit traditional villages and temples.  Later we can rest in the guest house.

  • Day 10: Trek from Dho Tarap to Numala Base Camp (4,440m)

    From Dho Tarap, we will trek toward Numala Base Camp, which is located at an altitude of 4,440m. The trek takes around 6-7 hours and passes through several high-altitude pastures and beautiful valleys. We will also get stunning views of the Numala Pass and the surrounding peaks. We will spend the night in Numala Base Camp.

  • Day 11: Cross Numala Pass (5,360m) and trek to Pelung Tang (4464m)

    It will be the most demanding day today and one of the longest days of our trek. After breakfast, we begin crossing the Numa La Pass on a steep trail up the top ridge of the pass. From the ridge, we get an unbelievable view of the barren mountains of Dolpo up to Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m). After getting to the top of Numa La, we descend to camp at Pelung Tang. 8 Hours walk today.

  • Day 12: Trek from Pelung Tang to Baga La Pass (5069m)

    After breakfast, we begin our steep climb up to the top of Baga La Pass. From here, we get fantastic views of the dry landscape and the distant snow-capped mountains including Mt. Kanjirowa. We spend some time at the top of the pass taking pictures and generally enjoying the mesmerizing views. Next, we descend to Dajok Tang for an overnight stay 7 hour's walk today

  • Day 13: Trek to Ringmo (3600m)

    We spend most of today’s trek on trails alongside beautiful pine forests and alpine vegetation. After trekking for a short while on an easy trail with only gradual highs and lows, we arrive at Ringmo Village. The village is a traditional Tibetan village of the Dolpo region. 5-6 hours walk today. Overnight in Ringmo

  • Day 14: Acclimatization in Ringmo, Excursion to Phoksundo Lake(3612m)

    Today discover the grand Phoksundo Lake and its shores. We see yak caravans moving in and out of Ringmo mostly towards Tibetan borders on remote mountain trails. The scene is even depicted in a Hollywood movie ‘Caravan’ shot mostly in this location. On our way to the lake, we also tour a nearby monastery. Upon reaching Phoksundo Lake, we can enjoy a relaxing walk on the serene lake’s shores. Overnight at Phoksundo.

  • Day 15: Trek to Shyanta (2520m)

    We trek downhill to Chepka. From Chepka the trail follows a massive overhanging rock. During our trek, we find many important medicinal minerals which are believed to cure almost anything in this area. The route then passes through villages, before climbing to Shyanta. 6-7 hours walk today. Overnight in Shyanta.

  • Day 16: Fly to Nepalgunj and then Kathmandu

    We march towards Jhupal via Sulighat on a trail surrounded by birch trees. From atop a ridge, we get the most spectacular views of the mountain above us and Jhupal Village below. We fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. We transfer to the hotel.

  • Day 17: Rest Day

    Explore Kathmandu city. Thamel is a popular tourist hub. Take rest and stay relaxed. Tonight join the farewell dinner. 

  • Day 18: Departure

    Transfer to the international airport before 3 hours your scheduled flight.
