Trip Overview

Makalu Base camp trekking is a hidden gem of Nepal. Arun Valley and Barun valley both are the world’s most significant valleys in terms of ecology. Makalu Trekking used to be camping trekking as it was difficult to access before a few years. The world’s fifth-highest mountain offers a diverse ecosystem. As it is a pathway of great Himalayan trials, we can cross Amphu Laptsa Pass(5845m) to connect our trekking to the Everest Base camp trekking route.

Makalu Barun national park is a well-conserved region of Eastern Nepal for its natural beauty and great diversity of flora and fauna. We start our journey to Makalu Base camp from Tumlingtar airport following Arun river one of the tributaries of Sapta Koshi river. From Tumlingtar, we drive to Num bazar. The trial follows the beautiful Barun River valley in the Makalu Barun National Park. In a single day, we cross several passes including the Shipton La(4220m) which is above 4000m.

Trekking to Makalu base camp is best suited in Spring and Autumn seasons. During Autumn you can see the beautiful pastureland where yaks are grazing. Different varieties of flowers bloom in this season. The festive mood and local culture will enhance your knowledge. The trek starts in warm, terraced farmland to the Alpine region inhabited by the Rai people, an ethnic group found predominantly in the hills of eastern Nepal. That’s the reason you can observe lowlands and the Himalayan range at the same time. When you approach the base camp, the spectacular views of Mount Makalu, Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and many other small peaks make you spellbound. During the spring season, as you climb up, you will pass through rhododendron forests of different colors including red, purple, pink, and white. The Makalu Barun National Park is home to some of Nepal's rarest flora and fauna, including the Red Panda.

Makalu base camp trekking almost rarely treks zone in Nepal. The less crowded virgin land is full of natural beauty. If you like to do adventure in the Himalayas, the next destination is none other than the Makalu Base Camp trek.
