Explore the Cultural and Natural Wonders of Annapurna Region in Nepal

Nepal is a small Himalayan country which is 885km long from east to west and it stretches across a diverse range of topography. Nepal extends wider in western part as compare to eastern region. There are big rivers like Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, and Mahakali. These rivers formed valleys which are flowing from mighty mountains. Annapurna mountain range have several rivers flowing to the south via valleys of Annapurna which has contributed to develop civilization in this region. The cultural heritage of Annapurna Region dominated by Gurungs and Magars. The region is situated in the north-central region which is world popular trekking destination. There are several trekking routes in the lap of Annapurna Mountain which is 10th highest mountain in the world. Annapurna region characterize with its high peaks, lush forests, and diverse cultural practice.

In the 70s, 80s, and even in 90s, Annapurna circuit trekking was one of the longest trekking routes which took more than 20 days to complete. With the development of road infrastructure up to Manang district headquarter which reduces the trekking days significantly. At the same time in Mustang district, road is available to Muktinath temple which again reduces 4-5 days of trekking. But these days newer destination added in Annapurna circuit trek to make it more adventure, cultural and natural. These days ice lake, Braga Monastery are added in the itinerary to make it more cultural and spiritual trek than before. The significant of Gurungs culture and warm hospitality makes it more beautiful. We cross beautiful valleys, including lush forests, with the rise in elevation, we experience arid deserts, and high-altitude mountains which provides stunning views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain range to the trekkers.

The region is influenced by Gurung, Thakali, and Magars ethnic community and they are famous for their hospitality and traditional cuisine. Thakali food is popular throughout the country. Trekkers can explore the culture and traditions in this region. Besides Round Annapurna trek, Annapurna region has several popular trekking routes, such as Annapurna Base camp, Ghorepani poon hill trek, Upper mustang tour, Mardi Himal base camp trek, and several short and easy home stay trek. Ghalegaun, Bhujung, Lo-wang, Australian camp, Dhampus, Sikles, Kaphuche glacier lake trek are others trekking routes with an opportunity to explore local culture and traditions. The breathtaking mountain vistas are common features of these area. 

While planning trekking in Annapurna region, trekkers have an opportunity to explore the region in cultural and spiritual way. Muktinath temple is one of the significant regions of Annapurna region. Muktinath is sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. Throughout the year, pilgrims from Nepal and India visit this holy place. Upper Mustang is still restricted area in the region and with special permit one can travels this region. The Upper mustang is highly influenced by Tibetan culture and consider it as forbidden Kingdom. The unique culture and traditions of this region always attracts trekkers from different parts of world. At present cultural immersion trek and tour program is best suited for the student of Sociology and Anthropology. The numerous caves in Mustang and the life style of people and their wooden and mud houses are still interesting part to explore. The human civilization and the connectivity of this region and people’s growth are unique facts to study in the presence of modernity. 

Lo-Manthang is capital of Mustang. The historical King’s palace, unique architecture is still alive there which is wonderful experience for travelers. At the same time, if you are interested in Buddhism and their practice in the remote mountain, you can explore Manang valley where Braga monastery and Gompa monastery are best suited for new experience and learning heritages of mountain. The hiking to ice lake from Braga village is new route that has added in Round Annapurna trekking. The diverse culture and splendid vistas will make the trip memorable. Braga village and its surrounding offers 3 days cultural heritage tour which includes ice lake and meditation session in Braga monastery. There are hundreds of buddha statue in the gompa. During Buddha Purnima, there is a special celebration and homage in the monastery. Trekkers can explore and enjoy the cultural and organic tour in this region. This is less crowded and untouched from modernity till date.

Ecologically, Annapurna region is rich in flora and fauna. Rare species of animal such as Snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr and musk deer can see during trekking. In the spring, fourteen types of Rhododendron blooms in this region. While experiencing culture and tradition, one can explore the eco system of the area. Even adventure activity like honey hunting can experience in this region. Lamjung district is popular for homestay program and honey hunting activity. The traditional honey hunting in the hills of Bhujung, Lipey lake, Landruk, and in Lo-wang village are being popular these days to mad honey lover to enjoy adventure and taste of honey.

Traditionally, people use to involve in farming, animal husbandry, and trading. Annapurna region is popular for brave Gurkha and almost every family join in army or police service in Nepal or in Indian army, British army, Hongkong police, Singapore police. These days remittance is major source of income. Women are artistic and popular for their handicraft work. The attire used in this region is unique in every destination of our trekking. 

Overall, the Annapurna Region is naturally gifted where trekkers can enjoy adventure, explore culture, and learn the unique tradition and experience warm hospitality while observing mighty Himalayas and surroundings.
